The win marks a massive milestone for Taylor, who has spent two decades evolving from a teenage choreographer for Beyoncé to a bona fide cinematic powerhouse.
“Our Softness Is Not A Liability”
Visibly emotional as she took the stage, Taylor delivered a speech that immediately went viral for its raw honesty and empowerment. After jokingly checking in on her daughters, “Y’all better be off those damn phones and watching me right now!” She pivoted to a profound message for Black women and girls.
“To my brown sisters and little brown girls watching tonight, our softness is not a liability. Our depth is not too much. Our light does not need permission to shine. We belong in every room we walk into.”
Taylor also shared a moment of gratitude for director Paul Thomas Anderson (whom she affectionately dubbed Paul “Let ‘Em Cook” Thomas Anderson), thanking him for his “vision, trust, and brilliance” in casting her alongside heavyweights like Leonardo DiCaprio and Sean Penn.
Why “Perfidia Beverly Hills” Is the Talk of the Industry
In One Battle After Another, Taylor plays Perfidia Beverly Hills, a member of a 1970s-style revolutionary group called the French 75. Critics have hailed the role as “the most complex character of the year,” noting Taylor’s ability to balance the grit of a radical leader with the vulnerability of a mother struggling with postpartum depression and the weight of being “unprotected.”
The film was the big winner of the night, securing several major categories:
- Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy
- Best Screenplay, Motion Picture
- Best Director (Paul Thomas Anderson)
From the Booth to the Big Screen
Taylor’s “EGOT” trajectory is looking more real than ever. While she’s dominating the awards circuit for her acting, she hasn’t left her music roots behind. Her latest album, Escape Room, recently earned her a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Album, proving that Teyana is currently operating at the peak of her powers across all mediums.
As the industry looks toward the Oscars on March 15, Taylor is widely considered the front runner to take home the gold.
